The Sabres were formed by the Knox brothers, Northrup and Seymor, and joined the NHL in 1970. In the teams first draft they took center Gilbert Perreault as the NHL's number one overall pick . Their first season saw Perreault earn the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year and lead the team with 38 goals. Perreault would go on to become one of the best players in NHL history.
Last year the Sabres surprised the league, and even some fans, when they won the Northeast Division and advanced to the Conference playoffs. Most of the teams success can be attributed to the outstanding effort put forth by their two goalies, Ryan Miller and Martin Biron. Though not picked for the Olympic team, Miller is consided to be the best American goalie.
The Sabres are looking forward to another successful year with the return of many key players including Miller and Biron, forwards Daniel Briere and Chris Drury, and defensemen Dmitri Kalinin and Teppo Numminen. ESPN and Sporting News have picked the Sabres to go to the Stanley Cup.
